In the age of technology, the concept of a smart household is no longer a futuristic dream but a comfortable reality for many. The integration of smart devices in our daily lives has not just enhanced the convenience factor but also transformed our living spaces into more responsive and interactive environments. Among the myriad benefits that smart homes offer, one particularly delightful aspect is the ability to streamline and personalize our morning routines. In this guide, we'll explore how a well-designed smart home morning routine can start your day on the right note, using Home Assistant as our platform of choice.

Step 0: Platform

When setting up a smart home system, the choice of platform is crucial. Home Assistant, with its Zigbee interface (find out more) and compatibility with a wide range of smart home devices, stands out as a versatile and powerful tool. Its open-source nature and strong community support make it a preferred choice for DIY enthusiasts and tech-savvy users looking to customize their smart home experiences.

Step 1: Trigger

The cornerstone of any morning routine is predictability. In our scenario, the routine kicks off at precisely 5:55 AM each weekday, leveraging the simple yet effective trigger of time. This consistency ensures that the smart home system knows exactly when to spring into action, making our mornings predictable and stress-free.

Step 2: Conditions

Not all mornings are created equal. Recognizing the luxury of sleeping in on weekends, it's essential to incorporate conditions into our automation. Home Assistant checks if today is one of the 5 workdays (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday), thus preserving the sanctity of our weekend slumber.

Step 3: Script

The actual logic of the morning routine runs within a script instead of directly in the automation. This allows for easier linking of other parameters and quicker, more organized editing. Another advantage is that I can call the morning routine from other automations, such as when I want to wake up at a different time during vacations but keep the routine the same.

Step 4: Bathroom and Kitchen Temperature

At 5:55 AM, the heaters in the bathroom and kitchen turn on to ensure we don't freeze in winter. The heaters only run until a certain temperature is reached in each room. In the morning, it's a cozy 73 Fahrenheit (23° Celsius) in the bathroom and 70 (21° C) in the kitchen. This ensures the heater doesn't turn on unnecessarily when it's already warm enough. Step 5: Light Alarm

As the apartment gradually warms up, a gentle light alarm eases us out of sleep. An automation gradually increases the brightness of the bedside lamps over 10 minutes, simulating a natural sunrise. For added reliability, a "regular" alarm on our Amazon Echo Dot rings at the end of the fade.

Step 6: Coffee Maker

A small pleasure (though admittedly just a gimmick – find more smart home gimmicks) is our coffee maker in the morning. Since we don't have a smart machine or one that starts automatically when plugged in, we found a workaround: A small Switchbot attached to the machine physically presses the power button, so the machine is preheated by the time we reach the kitchen.

Step 7: Radio

Since music is a significant part of our lives, we can't do without it in the morning. So, our favorite playlist starts playing on our Sonos speaker in the kitchen, perfectly timed with the coffee maker. Although our Sonos speaker, created in collaboration with Ikea, sometimes has minor connectivity issues with our network, it's always reliable during the morning routine, setting the tone for the day ahead.

Step 8: Lights in the Rest of the House

To make waking up a little less dark and cold, a few more lights come on throughout our home. This includes the ambient lighting in our kitchen and the lamps in the office. This creates an inviting atmosphere, making it easier to transition from the comfort of our beds to the start of our day.

Conclusion

Establishing a smart home morning routine is not just about embracing technology but about elevating the quality of our daily lives. The convenience, comfort, and customization offered by a system like Home Assistant can transform mundane mornings into delightful beginnings. It's a testament to how smart technology can adapt to our needs, making every day a little easier and a lot more enjoyable.

As we continue to integrate smart devices into our homes, the possibilities for automation and personalization are endless. Whether it's fine-tuning your morning routine or exploring other aspects of smart living, the journey is yours to design. Embrace the potential of your smart home and discover the difference it can make in your daily routine.
